My works are based on photos in my family album. This image is close cropped from an old snapshot of children on a carousel. I was intrigued by the structure of the image, the twisting limbs of the riders and horses, the rhythmic geometry of the vertical poles, and the play of light and shadow across the different surfaces.

Gibson's Antique Store on Chebucto Road is one of those buildings you pass everyday but stays in your memory. I admire the architecture, color and light.

A whimsical scene of a Cape Islander and a dinghy tied up at Blue Rocks. This painting immortalizes an enchanting view of a Nova Scotia cove as a record in time as the weathered wharf has since been reclaimed by the ocean.

The constantly shifting pattern of colour and light of the ocean is an increasing fascination for me. I find the mystery of this dynamic and ancient subject deeply compelling. Water embodies the concept of endlessness, of complexities created from one drop to the vast sea. I am interested in conveying how the ocean resonates, rather than a literal depiction. Giving the work a decidely contemporary immediacy and relevance. From one painting to the next, I attend to an ever deeping engagement and understanding with this entity that is moving water.

Hope can be defined as an optimistic attitude of mind based on an expectation of positive outcomes related to events, circumstances in one's life or the world at large. It opposites include dejection and despair - products of chronic hunger and poverty. Feed Nova Scotia's mandate to feed hungry people and to elimnate chronic hunger offers hope. In this portrait, the clearly defined face symbolizes progress and looser context symbolizes work to be done to eliminate these problems.

This painting shows the Mabou Coal Mines harbour circa 1940. The two fihermen are Angus Gillis (taller), my uncle, and Angus Cù (Gaelic for "dog") MacDonald. Both were great storytellers in their day and there are many great stories about them as well. Angus Gillis and Angus Cù were lifetime friends and both steeped in their Gaelic culture and knowledge oh history and ancestry. In deep conversation, most likely Gaelic, these men are very present to one another surrounded by their natural environment. This painting is dedicated to a people and way of life that seems so far removed from much of today's reality.

This painting is part of a series in which I describe how the process of memory works. By using the still-life tradition of objects as symbols, I am creating an image of how that process looks at the moment when something is remembered or forgotten.

Sailboats are one of my favourite subjects to paint. They have such lovely swooping lines of hull and sail. The white shapes against our blue green waters are a delight to paint. I chose to paint this scene in celebration of the excitement of being in a sailboat race, when each skipper is striving to sail at their best, and yet the outcome is still partly at the mercy of the wind and weather. Much like in painting outdoors, sailing is equal parts skill and knowledge of the elements.

The scene depicts the end of the pond in St. Croix, this is the pond next to exit 4 on highway 101. Though very realistic, seen up close, the brushwork looks like impressionism. It's a calm, beautiful and inviting space; an example of the splendour of rural Nova Scotia.
